Oye

Can I just say I LOVE Dr. Olson! McLovin had his vet appt. I was sooooo worried about the cost since I am basically working for peanuts on this business and have no other source of income. I hadnt slept in days because of this. Not to mention I have no idea what I am going to do with him.

Anyway, why I love Dr. O. She examined him, dewormed him and tested him all for super cheap. Plus she is going to neuter him for me and get him started on his vaccs. I cant even begin to express how grateful I am. I wish I knew how to repay her for all the awesome things she does for me.

But, heres the bad news. McLovin is FIV positive. Now, where I might have thought it was the end of the world earlier in my career as a tech, now not so much. Its not a huge deal however this could really pull the plug on rescue organizations taking him in. They have enough "healthy" ones to adopt out, much less one that has a disease, no matter how minor it is to treat.

Which is totally ironic. I adopted Edgar from one of these rescue groups and was ASSURED and given documents stating he was neg for FeLv and FIV. However, since I trust no one when the health of my cats are involved I retested him after a lengthy seclusion and lo and behold...positive for FIV.

I was super pissed and upset but there was no way I was giving him back. I was already in love.

Anyway, its all good but I doubt that these rescue groups will be keen to actually rescue a cat that may be harder to place. Hopefully all this treatment will help his case.

I hope so.

We shall call him McLovin

Although that is pretty dangerous. Cuz naming means I am getting attached. But, I realize that the shaky truce between Merlin, Edgar and Piggy would come to an end if I threw a 4th cat into the mix. So, he must find a new home.

Meanwhile, I am treating his eye, medicating him for an abscess and will be taking him to see Dr. Olson this week for his eye and to treat his diarrhea. God only knows what is living in his gut. He has been subsiding on trash and pond water so I gather he has quite a few freeloaders having a grand time in his digestive tract. He has been eating well though. Really well. He has been hanging out in a large dog crate in my garage, mostly content. He howls every so often but he is an uneutered male so I attribute most of that nosiness to that fact. He was noisy when he was roaming around too. Always vocalizing. He sleeps a lot and seems to be alright with the situation. I figure his alternative is much worse. I think he realizes that too.

Honestly, I am a little concerned about where I am going to take him. No one is accepting cats. The one that I thought I could count on told me to neuter him and let him live outside. Um, no. I wrote back explaining, nicely I might add, that I really think that free roaming cats are a huge problem and I can not contribute to that problem.

I explained that as a wildlife rehabber I have to patch up all the birds and small mammals that are victims of cat attacks. Its not the cats fault, they are just trying to survive being thrown outside (point #1). Also, I explained that I cannot release him knowing that eventually he will succumb to some horrific death through disease, cruelty, trauma or hit by car. I've seen that way to many times. Its just awful to leave a cat to fend for themselves outside. I dont care if you vaccinate them, alter them and even feed them. You are just sticking your head in the sand. It never ends well.

Anyway! Whew, depressing. He's a great cat though and I am holding out hope that he will find the home he deserves!

Kitty rescue mission

OMG. After what seemed like an eternity, we finally were able to catch the little black and white kitty that has been hanging around the neighborhood. He's sweet but understandably scared.

We put him in a large dog crate we bought of craigslist to use for wildlife we get in but we hadnt had to use it for that. Unless you count it as a corral for the tortoises.

However it is perfect for this little guy. He has a terrible eye infection, needs neutered BADLY (he stinks) and of course the inevitable FeLV/FIV testing that is always done with bated breath. I plan on calling Dr Olson in the am and working out when I can get him in.

He has a big fluffy sleeping bag in there with him, a huge bowl of water and he ate a good meal. He started to purr when I pet him. Seems like he is comfortable and settled in for the evening!

Go-pher it Major Tom!

Recently admitted a HUGE Gopher Tortoise (Major Tom=) to the rehab center. Hit by car, cracked carapace=( However, the injury was superficial and limited to the scutes. He was a very lucky tortoise.

BUT, the good news is .......he was released today! He's been with me for the last week just resting and recuperating. And boy, did he rest. I made a little "burrow" for him out of a box and he spent most of his time in there, asleep. Good for him.

Best of all, he was released where he was found so he can resume his daily life. Its tough on them to acclimate to a new release site. They will try and find their homes so its best to return them to the original area where they were found.

Now if we could just depave the road where he and a lot more tortoises made their homes near, I would sleep a little better at night.
